Taipei, August 18, 2025 — FarEasTone Telecommunications will discontinue its popular 4G unlimited data plans sold through dealer channels starting September 2, shifting its focus toward promoting 5G services.
Dealers and telecom shops recently shared an internal FarEasTone notice online, titled “5G Tariff Adjustment Announcement,” which stated that the company will be removing the 4G “6XX series” unlimited data packages from distribution channels. The directive instructs dealers to encourage customers to switch to 5G subscriptions, promising improved network capacity and a better 5G user experience.
The move marks the first major step by a telecom operator in Taiwan to retire unlimited 4G offerings. Industry watchers suggest that rival carriers could soon follow suit, further narrowing consumer options for affordable 4G unlimited plans.
In the past, Taiwan’s telecom market was fiercely competitive, with companies driving down prices through campaigns such as the famous “4G NT$499 unlimited” deals. But following the merger of Taiwan Star and Asia Pacific Telecom, the three major operators have scaled back discounts and are now accelerating the transition to 5G.
Some dealers voiced concern that the change leaves customers with fewer choices, effectively pressuring them to adopt 5G even though many feel network improvements have not been significant enough to justify higher costs. One reseller commented that the end of 4G unlimited plans “undermines consumer rights,” as users are forced into pricier 5G packages.
Although the dealer-distributed 4G 6XX series plans will disappear in September, FarEasTone’s official website still lists a 4G unlimited plan at NT$599 per month with a 12- or 24-month contract. However, compared with promotions previously available through dealer channels, the pricing is slightly higher.
The shift signals a broader industry trend as telecoms phase out older-generation unlimited plans in favor of expanding 5G adoption across Taiwan.
