Air-Conditioning Technician Dies After Fall from Taipower Building in Keelung

Keelung City, Taiwan – July 17, 2025 — A tragic workplace accident occurred this afternoon in Keelung City when a 50-year-old air-conditioning engineer surnamed Hong fell from the sixth floor of the Taipower Keelung District Business Office while installing an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Despite emergency efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the Keelung City Fire Department, their 119 Disaster Relief and Rescue Command Center received an emergency call at 4:24 p.m. reporting that a man had fallen from a height at the Taipower building located on Ren’er Road, directly across from the entrance of Xinyi Elementary School.

Emergency responders from the Xin 2nd Squadron quickly arrived on the scene and found Mr. Hong lying unconscious in a flower bed beside the outer wall of the power distribution building. He had no pulse or signs of breathing. Paramedics immediately performed CPR and transported him to Keelung Hospital under the Ministry of Health and Welfare. After 30 minutes of resuscitation attempts, medical staff declared him dead.

Mr. Hong was reportedly the owner of an air-conditioning service company contracted under Taipower’s joint supply agreement. He was carrying out installation work on the building’s sixth floor at the time of the incident. His wife, who was assisting him on-site, told investigators that he had been using a backpack-style safety harness, and she was unsure how the fall occurred.

The local police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, sealed off the area, and began collecting evidence. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fall, including whether any safety equipment failed.

Taipower Keelung District Business Office expressed condolences and stated it will fully cooperate with the investigation to determine the cause of the accident and ensure that proper safety measures are reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
