Banqiao Showdown: Netizens Cheer as Arrogant Youth Gets KO’d

New Taipei City — July 23, 2025
An altercation broke out at Nanya Night Market in Banqiao District on Tuesday night, resulting in a young man being knocked unconscious after provoking an older man during a heated exchange.

According to police reports, the confrontation began when a woman accidentally bumped into 20-year-old Li while visiting the market with a friend, 48-year-old Xu. Although the woman apologized immediately, Li allegedly responded aggressively and hurled insults. This upset Xu, who demanded an apology for his companion.

However, instead of apologizing, Li reportedly lashed out and threw the first punch. Xu responded in self-defense, landing a single blow that sent Li crashing to the ground. Bystanders intervened, and both men eventually left the scene after the scuffle deescalated.

Footage of the incident quickly went viral on social media. In the video, Li — identifiable by the tattoos on both arms — is seen being floored by Xu and held down by the collar. A woman believed to be Li’s girlfriend can be heard yelling, “Don’t hit my boyfriend!” Netizens reacted swiftly with mockery, calling the younger man out for his behavior and poor performance in the fight. Comments like “The weight classes are not even” and “I’d break up with a boyfriend like that” circulated online.

The Banqiao Police Station confirmed that officers received a report about a fight at the night market around 8:00 p.m. on July 22. Upon arrival, both parties had already left the area. Authorities tracked down Xu, who admitted to his involvement but expressed that he had no intention to press charges. As of writing, Li has yet to respond to police summons.

The police stated that a formal notice will be issued for Li to appear and give his side of the story. Should neither party pursue legal action, the case may still lead to penalties under Taiwan’s Social Order Maintenance Act due to the public nature of the brawl.
