August 22, 2025 – Taichung, Taiwan – A major food safety scare has rocked Taichung after more than 300 diners reported illness linked to the Beiping Jinyinlou Roast Duck Direct Store in Fengyuan District late last month.
According to the Taichung City Health Bureau, laboratory tests confirmed that food served by the restaurant was the source of the outbreak. Salmonella was detected in some samples collected during the investigation. Officials said the incident violates Article 15 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act. The case has been referred to the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office under Article 49 for further legal action.
In a public statement, the restaurant operator issued a formal apology, bowing three times to express regret and pledging full cooperation with health authorities. The company said it immediately suspended operations at the Fengyuan outlet once complaints surfaced. To ensure transparency and fairness, the operator has hired Yun Yang Insurance Notary Public Co., Ltd. to oversee compensation for affected customers.
Taichung City Consumer Protection Officer Kang Xinren revealed that 209 complaints have been filed so far. Consumers seeking compensation are advised to submit medical documentation either through the city government’s Consumer Service Center or directly to Yun Yang Insurance Notary Public, which is coordinating claims with the restaurant and its insurer.
The health bureau emphasized that it will continue to monitor the situation and work with prosecutors to determine accountability. Officials also reminded food establishments to strengthen hygiene controls to prevent similar incidents.
