Authorities in New Taipei have launched a homicide probe following the grim discovery of a man’s body stuffed inside a suitcase in Xinzhuang District late Monday night.
The suitcase, described as giving off a strong foul odor, was found abandoned in a drainage ditch near a secluded alley off Xintai Road, according to local police. Upon opening the luggage, officers discovered the decomposing remains of an adult male, wrapped in a black plastic bag.
Decomposition Hinders Evidence Collection
Investigators believe the body may have been exposed to the elements for more than a week, and recent heavy rains may have washed away critical forensic evidence. The victim is believed to be over 60 years old, bald, and reportedly had polio, which had caused severe muscle atrophy in both legs.
Due to the body’s condition, no visible external injuries were immediately noted, and the collection of fingerprints was not possible. A full autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death, while DNA samples have been taken to assist in identifying the victim.
Area Familiar to Suspect
Investigators suspect that the individual who abandoned the suitcase was familiar with the area, given the secluded nature of the location. A joint task force has already gathered and is now reviewing surveillance footage from six security cameras in the vicinity for any leads.
Two Primary Investigative Leads
Authorities are focusing on two main angles: identifying the deceased and determining who was responsible for the disposal of the body. Police are cross-referencing recent missing persons reports and have appealed to the public for help.
“We urge anyone with missing elderly family members to come forward and assist with identification by providing relevant documents,” officials said.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out foul play. Prosecutors and forensic experts are working closely to establish both the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death.
