The Supreme Court has ruled that the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte are unconstitutional. This was announced on Friday by Court spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting during a press briefing.
According to Atty. Ting, the high court found that the impeachment process violated the “one-year rule,” which prohibits more than one impeachment complaint against the same official within a 12-month period. The court also emphasized that due process must be observed at every stage of the impeachment proceedings.
The decision came in response to a petition filed by Vice President Duterte, her legal counsel Atty. Israelito Torreon, and other petitioners. They asked the Supreme Court to declare the impeachment complaints against her null and void.
It can be recalled that three impeachment complaints were filed in December 2024 against the Vice President. These were related to allegations of misuse of confidential funds. A fourth complaint, endorsed by more than one-third of the House of Representatives, was later transmitted to the Senate.
With this ruling, the Supreme Court effectively ends the impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte, declaring all related actions invalid.
