KALOOKAN CITY — Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David has called on the public to show understanding rather than condemnation toward individuals struggling with online gambling addiction.
The Kalookan bishop and former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) likened the current societal attitude toward online gambling addicts to how drug users were once viewed — as mere problems in society, rather than people in need of help.
He emphasized that, like other vices, online gambling addiction may be rooted in deeper personal issues or hardships. “Some of them might be going through serious emotional or financial struggles,” Cardinal David said. “What they need is compassion and support, not judgment.”
He added that just as society has evolved in understanding the complexities behind drug dependence, there should also be empathy for those battling gambling addiction.
It can be recalled that Cardinal David previously appealed to the government to address the growing presence of online gambling in the country, citing its destructive impact on families and communities. He urged authorities to take decisive action to curb its spread and protect vulnerable individuals.
The prelate’s latest statement reinforces his ongoing advocacy to prioritize rehabilitation and awareness over punishment for those affected by modern-day addictions.
