Chiz Escudero Re-Elected Senate President as 20th Congress Opens

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero was re-elected as Senate President on Monday, July 28, securing a strong mandate at the opening session of the 20th Congress.

Escudero received 19 votes from his colleagues, winning over Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, who garnered five votes. The outcome reflects solid backing from the majority bloc and positions Escudero to lead the Senate for another term.

Shortly after the vote, Escudero took his oath of office and formally assumed the Senate presidency. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude for the renewed trust and emphasized the chamber’s duty to pass meaningful legislation that directly benefits the Filipino people.

Alongside Escudero’s reelection, Senator Jinggoy Estrada retained his post as Senate President Pro Tempore, while Senator Joel Villanueva was chosen as the new Majority Leader.

The leadership lineup was finalized during the inaugural session of the 20th Congress, setting the tone for the Senate’s legislative direction under Escudero’s stewardship. He is expected to focus on measures related to economic growth, public health, and institutional reforms.
