Manila, Philippines —
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has officially approved the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Board’s recommendation to import 424,000 metric tons of sugar to help stabilize the country’s sugar supply and prevent sudden price surges.
The move comes as domestic sugar production continues to suffer due to widespread pest infestations affecting local sugarcane plantations, resulting in reduced yield.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa stated that the importation aims to ensure a stable supply until the next harvest season and to maintain current market prices. “The objective is to avoid any significant movement in sugar prices during this period of limited production,” he said.
The DA emphasized that this strategic measure is crucial in meeting the country’s sugar demand while supporting food security and price stability.
