MANILA, Philippines — Mamamayang Liberal Party Representative Leila de Lima has raised serious concerns over the Supreme Court’s decision to declare the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte as unconstitutional.
In a statement, De Lima criticized the high court for issuing a ruling without hearing from all parties involved. She pointed out that the decision was released even before Vice President Duterte had formally responded to the complaint.
“How can the Court issue a final ruling when the respondent has not even submitted an official response? A decision made without due process is a decision hanging in the air,” said the former senator and human rights lawyer.
While affirming her respect for the Supreme Court, De Lima emphasized that the case involves matters of “transcendental constitutional importance” that require transparency, fairness, and adherence to legal procedures.
“I respect the Supreme Court. But in a case of this magnitude, we must demand clarity, not shortcuts. The public deserves an explanation,” she added.
The Supreme Court earlier ruled that the impeachment complaint violated the Constitution’s one-year bar rule and due process standards, effectively halting any Senate proceedings.
However, De Lima warned that the Court’s move risks undermining the constitutional process and weakening public confidence in institutions meant to hold high-ranking officials accountable.
