DOJ Clarifies: Missing ‘Sabungero’ Probe Not Targeted at Any Individual or Group

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has clarified that its ongoing investigation into the case of the missing cockfighting enthusiasts, or “sabungeros,” is not focused on any specific individual or group.

In a recent interview, DOJ Undersecretary Raul Vasquez emphasized that the probe is not “personality-driven,” saying the department is not singling out anyone as part of the investigation. Instead, he said the investigation remains impartial and evidence-based.

“We are not targeting any particular person or group,” Vasquez explained. “Whoever ends up being implicated in the case will be the result of the evidence gathered—not because of any personal agenda.”

Vasquez assured the public that authorities are committed to doing their jobs with objectivity and without bias. He said the DOJ is determined to ensure that only those who are clearly identified through credible evidence will be held accountable.

He also confirmed that the gathering of evidence remains ongoing. Authorities are working to strengthen their cases so they can file appropriate charges in court once those responsible are clearly identified.

Previously, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had ordered law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the mysterious disappearances to ensure that those behind the crimes are brought to justice.

The case of the missing sabungeros has sparked public concern and national attention, prompting repeated calls for transparency, accountability, and swift legal action.
