Family Dispute Escalates: Pingtung Man Threatens Parents With Knife, Subdued by Police

Pingtung, August 18, 2025 — A 35-year-old man surnamed Cai was subdued by police late Sunday night after a tense two-hour standoff in Donggang Township, Pingtung County.

According to authorities, Cai had demanded money from his parents but flew into a rage when they refused. Armed with a machete and a gas canister, he threatened both his family and responding officers. Police quickly dispatched more than ten officers to the scene, surrounding the residence as negotiations unfolded.

The confrontation moved from inside the home to the rooftop of the fourth floor, where Cai continued to resist. At the height of the standoff, Cai’s father urged him to drop the weapon. As he hesitated, officers seized the moment, rushing in to overpower him.

By 9:50 p.m., police had successfully subdued Cai and sent him to the hospital under restraint. A machete was confiscated at the scene. He has since been transferred to the Pingtung District Prosecutors’ Office for investigation on charges of public endangerment.

Authorities reminded the public that anyone struggling with psychological distress can seek help by calling Taiwan’s 1925 “Still Love Me” mental health hotline.
