Fatal Crash on National Highway 3 Claims One Life Amid Heavy Rain

TAIWAN, July 6 — A deadly car accident occurred on National Highway 3 this evening, leaving one man dead after a high-speed crash in rainy conditions. The incident took place at the 378.7-kilometer mark near the northbound exit of the Zhongliao Tunnel at approximately 9:04 p.m.

According to police reports, the driver, identified only as Mr. Li, was operating a small passenger vehicle when the accident happened. Due to poor visibility caused by the rain and reportedly excessive speed, Li lost control of the car. The vehicle first struck the inner guardrail and then veered toward the outer guardrail, where it crashed violently. Li was thrown from the vehicle onto the outer shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene. The car was left mangled beyond recognition.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the crash, including whether weather, speed, or other factors contributed to the fatal collision.

The accident site was cleared and traffic fully resumed by 11:02 p.m., handled by the Tianliao detachment. Police emphasized the importance of road safety during inclement weather and issued a reminder to all motorists: reduce speed when driving in the rain, increase the following distance between vehicles, and if aquaplaning occurs, avoid braking suddenly—release the accelerator and hold the steering wheel firmly to regain control.

As Taiwan continues to feel the effects of Typhoon Danas, which has brought widespread rainfall and strong winds across the island, officials are urging extra caution on the roads.
