What began as an evening of celebration ended in a scuffle last night at Zhongxiao Wharf in Sanchong District during the Dadaocheng fireworks display. A dispute over seating between a middle-aged couple and a younger pair escalated into a brawl that was captured on video and has since gone viral online.
According to police and witnesses, a woman in her 50s, identified by her surname Wu, sat on the ground reserving a spot for her husband with a plastic bottle while he stepped away. Moments later, a 22-year-old woman surnamed Lu passed through the area to take photos, prompting Wu to accuse her of occupying their reserved space. The two exchanged words but the argument subsided when the fireworks began.
Tensions flared again after the show ended around 8 p.m. Witnesses said the men—Wu’s 51-year-old husband and Lu’s 25-year-old boyfriend, Lin—bumped into each other, sparking a heated confrontation. The quarrel quickly escalated into pushing and shoving, with both women joining the fray.
A bystander’s video shows Wu pulling Lu’s hair violently, causing clumps to fall out, and then assisting her husband in attacking Lin. The altercation ended when nearby residents stepped in to break it up.
Police officers on duty at the fireworks event responded quickly. Lin sustained a scalp injury, while Wu suffered cuts on his hands and nose. The women did not appear to be injured. Authorities recorded their statements and confirmed that the couple surnamed Wu and Lin will be referred to the New Taipei City Summary Court for violating the Social Order Maintenance Act.
Each individual involved could face fines of up to NT$18,000. Although neither side plans to press charges at this time, both have sought medical care following the confrontation.
The incident has sparked heated discussion online, with many netizens condemning the older woman’s aggressive behavior.
