A pre-dawn traffic accident involving four vehicles occurred on National Highway 1 northbound in Rende District, Tainan, early Sunday, leaving four people injured, including one woman in critical condition.
According to the National Highway Police, the crash happened at around 2:57 a.m. at the 331.7-kilometer mark. A 27-year-old driver, identified only by his surname Zhuang, was operating a small passenger truck when, for still unknown reasons, he rammed into the rear of a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man surnamed Zhang. The collision forced Zhang’s car to stop in the inner lane.
Shortly after, a 21-year-old woman surnamed Li, who was driving behind, swerved in an attempt to avoid the stalled vehicle but struck the inner guardrail, causing her car to overturn and come to rest in the same lane. Moments later, a 44-year-old man surnamed Su also crashed into Zhuang’s vehicle, resulting in a four-car pileup.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and rescued Ms. Li, who had been trapped inside her overturned vehicle. She was transported to the hospital with severe injuries and immediately underwent surgery. The three other drivers sustained minor injuries and were also taken for medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that all drivers tested negative for alcohol. The crash site was cleared at around 4:28 a.m., allowing traffic flow to return to normal.
Police said the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. They reminded motorists to observe safe driving practices, avoid fatigue and distractions, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to help prevent similar incidents.
