Greece in Flames: 52 Wildfires Erupt Amid Scorching Heat Wave

Greece is battling a fresh wave of wildfires as temperatures soar across the country, reaching up to 44°C on July 26. The extreme heat, combined with dry conditions and strong winds, has fueled 52 wildfires in just 24 hours, according to the national fire service.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in a rural area about 25 kilometers north of Athens, where fires ignited near several factories containing flammable materials. Explosions were reported as flames consumed the area. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched, including 145 firefighters, 44 fire trucks, 7 helicopters, and 10 aircraft. Authorities also ordered the evacuation of nearby villages for safety.

At least five individuals were hospitalized due to burns and smoke inhalation, while thick smoke and intense heat continued to challenge rescue operations. Officials warned that the situation could worsen as hot, windy weather persists in the coming days.

Elsewhere, large fires are burning on the islands of Crete, Kythera, and Evia, with 335 firefighters, 19 aircraft, and 13 helicopters involved in response efforts.

The ongoing emergency highlights the growing impact of climate-driven extreme weather across Southern Europe, with wildfires now becoming a seasonal threat that demands rapid, large-scale intervention.
