TAITUNG, July 10 — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a heavy rain advisory early this morning for Dawu and Daren townships in southeastern Taitung, as torrential downpours triggered flooding and rising river levels throughout the region.
Impacted by a strong southwesterly wind system, the Southern Link area has been lashed by nonstop rain since last night. As of this morning, rainfall totals in Dawu and Daren have surpassed 190 mm, leading to significant water accumulation on several sections of the Southern Link Highway, making travel challenging for local residents.
Chaoyong Creek Overflows, Causes Localized Flooding
In Shangwu, the Chaoyong Creek swelled rapidly, breaching its banks and flooding the roadway. Upstream debris blocked access to the bridge, intensifying the overflow and raising safety concerns.
In response, the township office activated its emergency protocol, dispatching heavy machinery to clear debris and dredge the waterway. The Highway Bureau and local police were also on-site, setting up traffic control measures and diverting vehicles to safer routes. Fortunately, no major road closures have been reported so far.
Authorities Urge Caution
With rainfall expected to continue, residents are urged to remain cautious, avoid low-lying areas, and monitor official updates. The Central Weather Administration continues to track the weather system and advises the public to stay alert for further announcements regarding rain intensity and potential hazards.
Local authorities have reaffirmed their readiness to respond swiftly to any escalating conditions to ensure public safety.
