MANILA — Senator Risa Hontiveros has expressed opposition to any potential motion in the Senate to dismiss the articles of impeachment filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, emphasizing that such a move would be premature.
According to Hontiveros, it would be unwise for the Senate to vote immediately on a motion to dismiss, considering that both the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court have yet to finalize their respective actions on the case.
“If someone files a motion to dismiss, I will oppose it,” Hontiveros said. However, she refused to speculate on whether any senator would indeed push for such a motion on August 6, the agreed date when the Senate will deliberate on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the impeachment proceedings.
Meanwhile, a draft resolution is reportedly circulating in the Senate, aiming to clarify the institution’s stance following the Supreme Court ruling. Hontiveros confirmed she has signed the resolution, along with three other senators.
For Hontiveros, it would be more prudent for the Senate to wait for the House’s motion for reconsideration and for the Supreme Court’s ruling on that appeal before taking any definitive action.
“There’s a possibility that the Supreme Court could reverse its earlier decision,” she said. “It’s just common sense to wait for the House’s move and the High Court’s response before the Senate proceeds further.”
The impeachment case against VP Sara Duterte became controversial after the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional, sparking debates among lawmakers and various sectors.
