HSINCHU, July 9 — As Typhoon Danas swept across Taiwan, it brought with it strong southwesterly winds carrying heavy moisture, intensifying convection activity in the northern Taiwan Strait. Hsinchu City was not spared from the storm’s effects, with local authorities confirming a total of 17 weather-related incidents reported between 10:00 p.m. last night and 10:00 a.m. today.
According to the Hsinchu City Government, the incidents included seven cases of roadside tree collapses, one case of residential flooding, and nine cases of surface and underground water accumulation. As of this morning, 15 of these incidents have already been resolved, while two remain under active response. The Fire Department, Police Department, Environmental Protection Bureau, and Public Works Center are coordinating efforts to manage the situation.
The city experienced its most intense rainfall from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., with the maximum hourly rainfall reaching 42.5 mm. Total accumulated rainfall for the city was recorded at 153.5 mm, and forecasters warn that short bursts of heavy rain are still possible through the evening.
Acting Mayor Chiu Chen-yuan noted that early this morning, the water levels at Taiyuan and Yuanpei underpasses rose above 30 centimeters. In response, the city promptly dispatched traffic control teams. Thanks to the functioning of underpass pumping systems, the water was drained within 30 minutes, preventing any disruption to public transportation.
Mayor Chiu also reminded residents to take precautionary measures, such as checking and clearing drainage systems around their homes to avoid flooding. For those in need, sandbags and waterproof barriers are available at designated local offices.
He emphasized the importance of road safety during the ongoing rain, advising drivers to reduce speed and stay alert for slippery surfaces. He also warned against ignoring safety barriers at flooded underpasses, which may be lowered either automatically or manually, stating, “Never attempt to drive through barricaded areas—it could be life-threatening.”
To assist residents in flood preparedness, the Hsinchu City Government issued the following guidelines for collecting flood prevention materials:
-
Sandbags are available 24/7 at the East District, North District, and Xiangshan District Offices.
-
Waterproof baffles are available for loan from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today, and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.
-
Borrowing locations include the East District, North District, and Xiangshan District Offices. Citizens must bring valid identification for verification.
-
Additional borrowing stations are open at the Seaside Citizen Activity Center (No. 26, Shengjun Road, North District) and the Haishan Lianli Office (No. 1-1, Changxing Street, Xiangshan District), operating daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Due to their large size (L-shaped, 94x60x50 cm), the city recommends that residents use a vehicle when collecting waterproof barriers.
