September 7, 2025 – Hualien, Taiwan
A Hualien family is facing heartbreaking challenges after the sudden death of a father who left behind his wife and nine young daughters.
Minquan Village Chief Liu Yuanliang recalled first meeting the Su family four years ago, when he saw all nine children crowded into a single large bed in their small rented apartment. Deeply moved by their situation, he immediately assisted the family in applying for low-income household status and helped provide material support. Despite the hardships, Liu said Mr. Su never once complained, often remarking with optimism, “Children are the greatest gift from God.” Neighbors described the daughters as well-mannered and respectful.
Through perseverance, the family of ten managed to move into a townhouse in Guohua Village last year, bringing hope of a more stable life. However, tragedy struck when Mr. Su suddenly collapsed from an aortic dissection. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared brain dead, leaving his wife as the sole caregiver for their nine daughters.
The devastating news drew widespread attention and sympathy. Hualien Mayor Wei Jiayan personally visited the family, offering condolence funds and pledging that the city government would provide full support, particularly to ensure the children’s education. Mayor Wei emphasized the importance of helping the family endure this painful time.
Mrs. Su, overwhelmed with grief, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of assistance. Fighting back tears, she shared that her husband’s passing was so sudden that he never had the chance to say goodbye. She also appealed for understanding, asking the public to stop spreading negative remarks online about her late husband. “I have taken good care of my children,” she said. “Please give us space and let the criticism end.”
The family’s story has touched many in the community, highlighting both the struggles of large low-income households and the resilience of a mother now carrying the weight of raising nine children on her own.
