MANILA (September 17, 2025) — House Deputy Speaker and Zambales Rep. Jhay Khonghun revealed that Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez had long been contemplating resigning as Speaker of the House, especially after his name was linked to the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) flood control projects.
According to Khonghun, Romualdez made the difficult decision to prioritize the integrity of the institution. “He saw that the House, as an institution, was being heavily affected,” Khonghun said.
The lawmaker added that by stepping down, Romualdez will have more time to address the accusations and respond to the controversies hounding him. “One of his reasons was to sacrifice for the institution and for the country,” Khonghun explained.
Romualdez’s resignation is expected to pave the way for a leadership transition in the House of Representatives as it faces mounting public scrutiny over alleged corruption in infrastructure projects.
