Tainan, Taiwan – August 22, 2025 – A moderate earthquake shook southern Taiwan on Friday afternoon, with the Central Weather Administration confirming a magnitude of 5.4. The tremor struck at 2:06 p.m., with its epicenter located about 42 kilometers east-northeast of Tainan City Hall, in Nanhua District. It originated at a depth of 15.1 kilometers.
The quake registered an intensity level of 4 in several areas, including Tainan, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi County, and Kaohsiung. Surrounding regions such as Chiayi City, Pingtung, Taichung, Nantou, Hualien, and Taitung experienced slightly weaker shaking, recorded at intensity level 3.
Taiwan’s seismic intensity scale ranges from 1 to 7, with higher numbers indicating stronger shaking. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been issued as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
