Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Brutal Axe Attack on Brother in Taichung Night Market

Taichung, Taiwan — A man surnamed Wang has been formally charged with attempted domestic violence murder after he attacked his brother with an axe and a kitchen knife in a night market in Qingshui District, Taichung, last month. The shocking assault was reportedly sparked by a minor family dispute.

According to investigators, the violent incident occurred on the evening of June 1. The 42-year-old Wang was allegedly angered by his brother’s disapproving glare earlier that day and suspected that he had reported him to the police for making excessive noise while repairing a motorcycle near their home on Santian Road.

Driven by anger, Wang armed himself with a kitchen knife and an axe and went looking for his brother at the nearby Wuquan Night Market. At around 10 p.m., he found his brother and launched a sudden attack from behind, shouting, “I’m going to kill you!” as he repeatedly swung the axe.

Wang’s brother sustained multiple serious injuries, including deep lacerations to the chest, left hand, forehead, and the back of the head. Several arteries and veins were severed, with one wound measuring up to 12 centimeters in length.

Two friends of the victim, identified as Lai and Li, witnessed the attack and quickly intervened, restraining Wang until police arrived. Emergency responders rushed the injured man to the hospital, where doctors were able to stabilize his condition and save his life.

Authorities recovered both the axe and the kitchen knife at the scene. Wang was arrested on the spot.

During questioning, Wang admitted to attacking his brother but denied having any intention to kill. He claimed the assault was the result of a family disagreement. However, eyewitness accounts and medical reports presented by the prosecution indicated that the attack was premeditated and carried out with deadly intent.

Prosecutors emphasized the brutality of the assault, noting the severity and location of the injuries. They asserted that Wang’s actions showed clear intent to kill and were disproportionate to the perceived offense of being reported for noise.

The prosecution has completed its investigation and formally charged Wang with attempted domestic violence murder. They urged the court to impose a severe sentence, citing the extreme violence of the attack and the danger posed to public safety.
