YUNLIN COUNTY – Residents of Simei Village, Dongshi Township, remain shaken after a 41-year-old man, identified only by his surname Huang, violently killed his 93-year-old grandmother in the early hours of yesterday morning.

According to police and witnesses, Huang attacked the elderly woman with a knife and a stick, stabbing her twice in the chest with such force that the knives broke. Neighbors described the incident as shockingly brutal, with one saying, “How could there be someone so cruel?”

Huang, who had lived in northern Taiwan since childhood with his parents, returned to his father’s hometown in Yunlin about a year ago. His father, a garment factory worker in New Taipei City, had moved back earlier due to illness to recuperate and care for his mother.

After his father’s health worsened, Huang moved to Yunlin late last year to assist in caregiving. Neighbors noted that he was reclusive, rarely going outside or speaking to anyone, and his stern appearance made locals and even relatives uneasy.

Two months ago, Huang’s father passed away in his sleep, a loss that reportedly left Huang unable to cope. Since then, he had not been working and spent most of his time at home. Relatives said he often resented his grandmother’s constant nagging.

Around 2 a.m. yesterday, an argument between Huang and his grandmother escalated into a deadly assault. The commotion woke neighbors, who heard shouting and fighting. Relatives and bystanders tried to intervene, but Huang warned them to stay away. They waited for police to arrive, but by the time officers entered the scene, the elderly woman was already dead.

By the afternoon, the family had quietly set up a mourning hall, declining to speak publicly about the tragedy. Relatives expressed disbelief and grief over the incident, with some saying they no longer wished to have any contact with Huang.

Police are continuing their investigation into the motive and mental state of the suspect.
