Marcos Highlights Disaster Preparedness Amid Climate ‘New Normal’ in 2025 SONA

MANILA, Philippines – July 28, 2025 — In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. emphasized the government’s intensified efforts in disaster preparedness and monitoring, especially as the country faces the growing threats of climate change.

Acknowledging the so-called “new normal” in global climate patterns, Marcos said the government is stepping up vigilance against natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and other calamities.

“Masigasig ang ating paghahanda at pagmamatiyag laban sa banta ng sakuna at kalamidad, lalo na sa bagong normal ng nagbabagong klima at bugso ng panahon,” the President declared, underscoring the urgency of adapting to intensified weather disturbances caused by global warming.

Marcos noted that climate-related hazards have become more frequent and more destructive, requiring a shift in the country’s approach to disaster risk reduction and infrastructure resilience. He also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthen early warning systems, improve emergency response capabilities, and support climate adaptation efforts in vulnerable communities.

His remarks come at a time when the Philippines is still recovering from a series of typhoons and heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding, especially in central and southern regions.

The President’s climate-focused message forms part of a broader theme in this year’s SONA: safeguarding Filipino lives and livelihoods amid environmental and socioeconomic uncertainties.

Analysts say Marcos’ renewed focus on climate resilience is crucial, but many will be watching closely to see how these commitments translate into concrete action and long-term policy reforms.
