Marcos Orders Temporary Halt on Rice Imports to Protect Local Farmers

August 6, 2025 — Manila, Philippines
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a 60-day suspension on all rice importations starting September 1, in a move aimed at safeguarding local farmers during the harvest season.

According to Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez, the decision is part of the government’s efforts to shield Filipino rice producers from the influx of cheaper imported rice, which often leads to a drop in the market price of locally harvested palay.

Gomez stated that the President issued the directive following consultations with members of his Cabinet during the sidelines of his five-day state visit to India.

Prior to his departure earlier this week, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. had already recommended a temporary halt in rice importation and proposed an increase in tariffs on imported rice. However, Gomez clarified that while the import suspension will push through, President Marcos believes it is not yet the right time to discuss any adjustments to rice import tariffs.

The temporary import freeze comes as part of broader efforts to support the country’s agricultural sector and ensure stable incomes for Filipino farmers, particularly during the critical harvest period.
