President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. clarified that the Senate’s decision to archive the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte does not equate to the dismissal of the complaint.
Speaking in an interview, the President emphasized that the executive branch had no involvement in the Senate’s action. He reiterated his stance of non-interference in the impeachment case, leaving the matter entirely to the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Marcos pointed out that the executive has no role in the process, noting that he himself is also an impeachable officer.
In a recent vote, 19 senators supported the move to archive the articles, four opposed, and one abstained. Despite the House’s motion for reconsideration before the Supreme Court, the Senate proceeded with its decision.
The President also explained that the Supreme Court ruling only addressed procedural matters and not the substance of the impeachment complaint. He stressed that the court’s decision did not determine whether the allegations against the Vice President were true or false.
“There was no trial, and the contents of the impeachment complaint were never debated,” Marcos said, underscoring that the impeachment process is solely within the jurisdiction of Congress and the Supreme Court.
