HSINCHU COUNTY —Authorities have apprehended a Vietnamese national, identified only by his surname Feng (馮), for allegedly selling dog meat at Zhubei City’s Cultural Park, the Hsinchu County Animal Protection Center confirmed on Tuesday.

During the operation, officials seized 16 kilograms of butchered dog meat. The confiscated products were immediately frozen and sent to the National Animal Industry Foundation for laboratory testing, which later verified the meat’s origin. The case has been forwarded to the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.

The arrest followed a month-long undercover operation. In July, investigators posing as buyers arranged to purchase meat from Feng through intermediaries, agreeing to pay NT$700 (US$23) per kilogram. The meeting was set for July 4 at the park.

When Feng arrived with multiple plastic bags containing the meat, animal protection officers who had been monitoring the scene intervened, recovering the goods from his vehicle. He was later escorted to Changhua as part of efforts to trace the meat’s source and dismantle the suspected supply network.

According to Taiwan’s Animal Protection Act, the sale of carcasses from dogs, cats, or other animals banned from slaughter is strictly prohibited. Violators may face fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$250,000, and their personal details can be made public.

Officials are urging the public to refrain from purchasing unverified meat products to curb animal cruelty and ensure food safety.
