Mother and Daughter Injured by Fallen Tree in Kaohsiung as Typhoon Podul’s Winds Intensify

August 13, 2025 – Kaohsiung City – The impact of Typhoon Podul grew stronger in southern Taiwan after midday, with powerful winds in Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District toppling roadside trees. One such tree struck a mother and her 10-year-old daughter riding a motorcycle, injuring both.

The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on Bo’ai Road near Ruixing Elementary School. As the typhoon’s gusts intensified, a tree was uprooted and fell directly onto the passing motorcycle. The force of the impact caused the mother and child to fall to the ground.

Witnesses braved the wind and rain to assist the injured pair, quickly calling 119 for emergency services.

According to the Kaohsiung City Fire Department, the mother sustained minor injuries, while the child suffered more severe trauma after being struck by the tree. The girl was transported to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities have urged the public to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially near areas with older or unstable trees, as Typhoon Podul’s strong winds and rain are expected to continue into the evening.
