New Tropical Depression Forms Near Philippines, May Impact Taiwan This Weekend

TAIWAN — A new tropical depression formed at 8 a.m. today, raising the possibility of increased rainfall in Taiwan later this week. According to the weather enthusiast platform Watch the Weather, the system is expected to evolve into Tropical Cyclone Wipha, the sixth named storm of the season. It is projected to pass through the Bashi Channel on Saturday, potentially bringing substantial moisture to the island.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that a large low-pressure area east of the Philippines is continuing to develop and may intensify into a tropical system in the coming days. As it moves northwest, it is likely to approach Luzon Island, the Bashi Channel, and the South China Sea.

Possible Effects on Taiwan

As the system nears, it may enhance easterly winds around Taiwan, leading to increased atmospheric moisture and a higher likelihood of rainfall in some regions. However, forecasters note that the exact path and intensity of the system remain uncertain at this stage.

The CWA emphasized that it is closely monitoring the system’s progress and will issue updates as the forecast becomes more precise.

Residents are advised to stay alert for further advisories, especially those in southern and eastern Taiwan, as the potential tropical storm could bring unstable weather conditions over the weekend
