MANILA, Philippines (September 27, 2025)— The legal team of former President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed readiness to comply with any conditions set by the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding his possible interim release.
Lead counsel Nicholas Kaufman confirmed that Duterte has instructed him to exhaust all legal avenues to secure interim freedom, even if it means agreeing to restrictions such as living in a third country, limited travel, or constant monitoring.
At present, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber is reviewing the request from Duterte’s defense team. Kaufman added that the Philippine government has not opposed their petition, a factor that could strengthen their case.
Originally, the chamber was expected to hold a confirmation of charges hearing in November 2025. However, with the proceedings postponed indefinitely, judges are now considering whether Duterte’s continued detention is still necessary.
Vice President Sara Duterte previously revealed that another country has expressed willingness to host her father should the ICC grant his interim release.
