The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) faced intense backlash online after posting a lighthearted message referencing food and sleep, at a time when Filipinos were bracing for severe weather conditions.
On its official social media page, the DILG published a mock notification attributed to “Sec. Jonvic” that read:
“Mga Abangers, Sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay naka idlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan ninyo!”
(“Hey Abangers, My meal was great. I dozed off for a while because I was full. Now, here’s what you’ve been waiting for!”)
The post, which appeared against the backdrop of a satellite image of a storm, quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism from netizens who described it as “tone-deaf,” “unprofessional,” and “insensitive.” Many users pointed out that government agencies should maintain professionalism in their communication, especially during times of crisis when the public looks to them for accurate and timely updates.
Critics emphasized that while humor has its place, official platforms must consider the timing and appropriateness of such posts—especially when communities are facing danger due to typhoons or other natural disasters.
As of this writing, the DILG has not issued any apology or statement addressing the controversy.
