Diners at Rouduoduo Hot Pot in Kaohsiung’s E-DA Shopping Mall were startled when a large rat appeared on a customer’s table and began chewing on food. The incident, caught on video and shared online, sparked widespread concern about restaurant hygiene and food safety.
The video, posted on Threads with the caption “Ratatouille spotted at Rouduoduo in Kaohsiung,” showed the rodent climbing onto the table and gnawing at vegetables while other patrons looked on in shock, some shouting, “Catch it!” and “So scary!” Others joked about the unexpected dinner guest.
Following the complaint, the Kaohsiung City Health Bureau confirmed that the video was indeed filmed at the Rouduoduo E-DA branch. Although inspectors did not find rodents during their visit, the restaurant admitted the incident had occurred. Citing Article 47 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act, authorities imposed a NT$30,000 fine on the establishment.
In a public statement, the restaurant apologized for the situation, explaining that the event happened around 7 p.m. the previous night. Staff said they immediately addressed the customer’s concerns, comped the affected table’s meal, and collected contact information to follow up. After closing, the restaurant carried out a full cleaning and disinfection.
“Rouduoduo sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience and will continue to strengthen hygiene protocols to ensure customer safety,” the statement read.
The Health Bureau reminded all food establishments to maintain strict environmental and sanitation practices to protect diners. Authorities warned that violations will continue to be monitored and penalized in line with regulations.
