Red Rainstorm Signal Issued in Hong Kong as Severe Thunderstorms Hit the City

Published: July 25, 2025, 7:56 PM (HKT)

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 7:40 PM on Thursday evening (July 25), as torrential rain and intense thunderstorms continue to sweep across the city.

Earlier, at 7:23 PM, the Observatory released a special reminder warning the public about heavy downpours and squally thunderstorms affecting large parts of Hong Kong. Officials noted that the decision to raise the rainstorm warning level would depend on the evolving severity of the weather. Just minutes later, the warning was upgraded from yellow to red.

What the Red Signal Means

The red rainstorm alert indicates that more than 50 millimeters of rain has fallen, or is expected to fall, within an hour in widespread areas. The public is urged to prepare for possible flooding, transport delays, and disruptions to school schedules. Authorities have advised students, parents, and school administrators to stay tuned to announcements on television and radio for any school-related updates.

Residents near rivers are being warned to stay alert, as overflowing is likely. Flash floods are possible, and evacuation may be necessary in flood-prone homes.

A Timeline of the Storm’s Development

  • 6:30 PM–6:55 PM: The first signs of the storm appeared in the eastern districts, especially Sai Kung, where gusts reached speeds of 110 km/h and rainfall exceeded 70 mm/hour. The Observatory warned of hail and strong winds.

  • 7:00 PM: A special weather alert was issued indicating that many districts in Hong Kong would be affected by the storm in the short term.

  • 7:10 PM: A Yellow Rainstorm Warning was initially raised, later escalating due to worsening conditions.

  • 7:20 PM: Rainfall intensified significantly in Sai Kung, raising concerns of severe flooding in the area.

  • 7:23 PM: The Observatory updated its alert, stating that a Red Rainstorm Signal may be necessary soon.

  • 7:40 PM: The Red Rainstorm Warning was officially issued.

Safety Reminders

The public is advised to avoid low-lying areas, stay indoors, and monitor weather reports. Those needing to go outside should proceed with caution due to the risk of road hazards and reduced visibility.
