Renowned Surgeon Fatally Struck by Bus in Taipei; Operator Faces Possible NT$90,000 Fine

A respected physician was killed in a tragic road accident Saturday morning after being hit by a bus while using a pedestrian crossing in Taipei.

The victim, Dr. Chou Chia-cheng (周佳正), 60, served as the chief breast surgeon at the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Taoyuan General Hospital. According to reports, Dr. Chou was crossing at a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle operated by Shin-Shin Bus Co. He became trapped beneath the front wheel of the bus.

Emergency responders rushed Dr. Chou to National Taiwan University Hospital, but he showed no signs of life upon arrival. Medical staff attempted resuscitation, but he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed that the bus driver, surnamed Lee (李), tested negative for alcohol, and intoxication is not considered a factor in the incident.

Dr. Chou’s passing has sent shockwaves through the medical community. In a statement, Taoyuan General Hospital praised him as a highly dedicated and accomplished surgeon, particularly noted for his work in breast cancer treatment. The hospital mourned the loss of what it called an irreplaceable medical professional.

The Taipei City Public Transportation Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Officials are examining the driver’s background, including his experience and work schedule.

Since the collision took place at a pedestrian crosswalk, the case is being handled under Article 77, Paragraph 1 of the Highway Act, which allows for a maximum fine of NT$90,000 (US$3,062) against the bus operator for violations involving pedestrian safety.
