Romualdez Trio Now in Congress: Father, Mother, and Son Hold Seats

MANILA, Philippines – August 3, 2025 — The Romualdez family has made history in the Philippine Congress, with all three members—father, mother, and son—now holding seats in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez has returned to Congress as a Tingog Partylist representative after replacing a nominee who recently stepped down. Her son, Andrew Romualdez, also currently holds a seat under Tingog Partylist, while her husband, Martin Romualdez, serves as the Speaker of the House and district representative of Leyte’s 1st District.

With this development, the Romualdezes now form a rare political trio within the same legislative term—two from the same partylist and one as the House’s top official.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) confirmed Yedda’s reentry into Congress, citing her position in the official list of Tingog nominees submitted during the 2022 elections. Her return alongside her son Andrew has drawn both attention and scrutiny from the public.

Critics have raised concerns about political dynasties, questioning whether such family dominance aligns with the spirit of the partylist system, which was originally designed to represent marginalized and underrepresented sectors. Having both a mother and son occupy seats in the same partylist, with the father leading the House, has fueled debate on power concentration in government.

Supporters of the Romualdez family, however, view their presence as a sign of continued leadership and commitment to public service—especially to the people of Eastern Visayas, where Tingog Partylist is rooted. Yedda has been known for her advocacy in social welfare, women and children’s rights, and education. Andrew, one of the youngest members of Congress, is expected to represent the voice of the youth and contribute to modern legislative priorities.

Meanwhile, Speaker Martin Romualdez remains a central figure in national politics and a key ally of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

With Yedda and Andrew representing Tingog and Martin heading the House, the Romualdez family now holds significant legislative power—marking a new era of political influence, and igniting discussions on the balance between representation, service, and family legacy in Philippine politics.
