Severe Thunderstorm and Flood Warnings Issued Across Central Taiwan

July 8, 2025 – Taiwan — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued an emergency heavy thunderstorm advisory affecting Yunlin County, Changhua County, and Nantou County. The warning is expected to remain in effect until 12:00 noon today, with authorities urging the public to stay vigilant as severe weather conditions continue to develop.

According to the CWA, the affected areas are at risk of intense rainfall, frequent lightning strikes, and strong wind gusts exceeding level 9. Residents are also being warned about the possibility of sudden rises in stream water levels, landslides, falling rocks, and mudslides. Flooding and low visibility are expected in low-lying regions.

Areas Under Real-Time Thunderstorm Alert:

Changhua County: Yuanlin City, Tianzhong Township, Puxin Township, Yongjing Township, Shetou Township, Ershui Township, Beidou Township, Tianwei Township, Pitou Township, Zhutang Township, Xizhou Township
Nantou County: Nantou City, Zhushan Township, Mingjian Township
Yunlin County: Douliu City, Xiluo Township, Xitong Township, Linnei Township

The unstable weather is being attributed to a combination of a low-pressure system and southwest winds, which are expected to continue influencing the region through tomorrow. The CWA forecasts localized short-term showers or thunderstorms across central and southern Taiwan, including Penghu, with potential for heavy or even torrential rainfall in some areas.

Northern Taiwan will also see scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms, while mountainous regions across the island may experience isolated downpours.

Typhoon’s Outer Bands Affecting Matsu

The Matsu Islands are now feeling the effects of a nearby typhoon’s outer circulation. The weather bureau reports intermittent heavy showers, local downpours, and strong winds ranging from level 8 to 9. Rough seas and strong waves are also expected. In southeastern Taiwan, the presence of foehn winds may bring dry and warm conditions.

Flood Warnings Issued

In response to the anticipated heavy rains, the Water Resources Agency has raised flood alert levels in multiple locations:

Level 1 Flood Warning (High Risk):
Erlin, Hemei, Yuanlin, Puxin, Pushan, Pitou, Dacun, Changhua City, Yongjing, Xihu, Tianwei, Fuxing, Xiushui, Xianxi, Huatan, Fangyuan, and Lukang in Changhua County
