NANTOU COUNTY (September 28, 2025) – The highly anticipated Sun Moon Lake mass swim officially kicked off today with a festive opening ceremony, drawing thousands of spectators and participants to one of Taiwan’s most iconic scenic spots.
A total of 24,736 swimmers joined this year’s challenge, making their way across the 3,000-meter expanse of the lake. After the morning starting whistle, swimmers streamed into the water in waves, creating the famous “10,000-person dumpling” spectacle that has become a signature of the event.
As early as dawn, participants had already gathered along the Sun Moon Lake Ring Road and nearby trails, making their way to Chaowu Pier, the official entry point. Many warmed up with stretches and light exercises while waiting for their turn, eager to test their endurance in the lake’s cool waters and accomplish the symbolic crossing.
According to the Nantou County Government, this year’s swim included 2,140 teams and drew 361 international athletes from 35 countries, alongside 130 swimmers with disabilities who joined the challenge. Organizers estimated that more than 50,000 visitors converged on the lakeside to cheer, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Officials reminded participants to take safety precautions by warming up properly before entering the water, stressing the importance of avoiding hypothermia and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all.
The Sun Moon Lake swim has grown into one of Taiwan’s largest and most recognizable mass sporting events, attracting both elite athletes and recreational swimmers who come together to celebrate perseverance, camaraderie, and the beauty of the lake.
