TAITUNG, July 19, 2025 — As Typhoon Wipha continues to lash eastern Taiwan with intense rainfall, a suspected tornado briefly touched down in Nantian Village, Daren Township, Taitung County this morning, startling residents and causing minor damage to several homes.
According to local reports, the sudden whirlwind lasted only several dozen seconds but was strong enough to damage rooftops and scatter outdoor items. Five houses were affected, though no serious injuries or disasters were reported.
“It was terrifying! I’m just thankful I wasn’t swept away,” said a local resident surnamed Jin. She described how she quickly clung to a stone name pillar in front of her home to avoid being caught in the wind.
Village Chief Gao Fuyuan confirmed the incident, noting that the strong gusts appeared without warning and disappeared just as quickly. “It lasted only a short time, but the wind was very fierce. Some iron sheets were torn, and household items outside were blown away,” he said. The village chief has since reported the incident to the Daren Township Office for further assessment.
While tornadoes are rare in Taiwan, they can occur during typhoon season when weather conditions are unstable. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert as Typhoon Wipha continues to impact the region with its outer rainbands.
