Taipei, Taiwan — Starting October 1, 2025, foreign nationals and stateless individuals who have overstayed their visas in Taiwan will be eligible for a 50% reduction in fines if they voluntarily report themselves to authorities before being caught.
The National Immigration Agency (NIA) announced the updated policy under Article 74 of the Immigration Act, aimed at encouraging overstayers to return home earlier and avoid harsher penalties. Officials stressed that this is a chance for individuals to “give themselves an opportunity” to resolve their status and return home smoothly.
How It Works:
-
The fine reduction applies only if overstayers surrender voluntarily before being found during inspections.
-
After surrender, individuals must:
-
Pay the reduced fine
-
Apply for travel documents
-
Leave Taiwan within the given period
-
Those who fail to follow the rules will lose eligibility for the discount and must pay the full fine.
The NIA reminded the public that this regulation is part of Taiwan’s efforts to manage overstaying cases humanely while still enforcing immigration laws.
Authorities encourage anyone currently overstaying to take advantage of this new policy, avoid further legal trouble, and return home safely.
