Taiwan Weather Update: Afternoon Thunderstorms Likely, Possible Typhoon Development Under Watch

Taipei — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported today (September 13) that most of Taiwan will experience cloudy to sunny skies, though some regions may face short-lived thunderstorms in the afternoon. Meteorologists also cautioned that another typhoon could potentially form in the coming days.

According to the CWA, occasional showers are expected in Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula, while parts of western Taiwan may see brief rainfall in the early morning. As the day progresses, thunderstorms are likely to develop in mountainous regions and nearby plains in western Taiwan, with localized heavy rain possible in highland areas. The public is advised to remain alert to sudden weather changes and carry umbrellas when heading outdoors.

Weather expert Wu Derong, citing the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model, noted in his column “Secrets Revealed Classroom” that the Pacific High will strengthen today and tomorrow (14th). This will bring widespread sunshine, rising daytime temperatures, and intense ultraviolet rays. Wu advised residents to take precautions against heatstroke and sunburn. Afternoon showers or thunderstorms are expected mainly in mountain areas but may extend to nearby lowlands.

Forecast temperatures for today are:

  • North: 22–36°C

  • Central Taiwan: 23–36°C

  • South: 23–37°C

  • East: 22–36°C

Looking ahead, Wu predicted that on Monday and Tuesday (15th–16th), Taiwan will see mostly sunny skies with daytime highs climbing another 1–2 degrees Celsius. UV radiation will remain strong, and people are urged to prioritize sun protection. While most rain will be confined to mountainous areas, occasional brief showers could occur in Hengchun and eastern Taiwan.

From Wednesday to Friday (17th–19th), a tropical disturbance is forecast to pass north of Luzon. Though it may not develop into a full typhoon, the system will funnel moisture toward Taiwan, bringing increased rainfall to the eastern and southern regions. The rest of the island may see more cloud cover, scattered showers, and heavier downpours in the afternoon.

Authorities continue to monitor the tropical system’s path closely, as its development could influence Taiwan’s weather later this week.
