Taiwan’s population fell once again in July, extending a downward trend that has now lasted 19 months, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Friday.
At the end of July 2025, the island’s total population was recorded at 23,337,936—a decrease of 8,805 residents from June. Compared to July 2024, the population dropped by 71,387, representing a 0.3% decline.
Regional differences were apparent, with Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, and Taichung seeing population increases. Conversely, Kinmen and Lienchiang counties, along with Taipei City, experienced the steepest decreases.
Births in July totaled 8,939, down by 1,485 from the same month last year. The number of deaths reached 16,846, which was 1,856 fewer than in July 2024. On average, a baby was born every five minutes, while a death occurred every 2.6 minutes.
Migration figures showed 70,410 people moving into Taiwan during the month, 18,983 fewer than in June. Meanwhile, 71,308 individuals left the country in July—13,383 fewer than the previous month.
Marriages and divorces also fluctuated, with 7,418 marriages registered and 4,506 divorces recorded. Among these, there were 269 same-sex marriages and 84 divorces involving same-sex couples.
Age distribution data revealed that 11.62% of the population was aged 14 or younger, while 19.64% were 65 or older, highlighting ongoing demographic challenges for the island.
