Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday urged critics of Vice President Sara Duterte to face her at the ballot box in the 2028 national elections, rather than using impeachment as a political tool.
Cayetano’s remarks came during Senate deliberations on the fate of the impeachment case against the vice president, shortly after the Supreme Court ruled the complaint unconstitutional and invalid.
“If you don’t want Vice President Sara to become president, then beat her in 2028,” Cayetano said in Filipino, cautioning against using impeachment as a means for political rivalry.
While stressing the importance of public accountability, the senator emphasized that any move to oust an official must follow due process. “If she really did something wrong, then impeach her — but do it the right way,” he added.
Cayetano was among the senators who voted in favor of a motion to archive the impeachment complaint, citing the Supreme Court’s declaration that the Senate never acquired jurisdiction over the case.
At the time of his remarks, the Senate was still finalizing the vote on the motion.
