TAIWAN – August 2, 2025 — Widespread torrential rainfall across central and southern Taiwan triggered flooding and dangerous conditions, particularly in Kaohsiung and Tainan, prompting emergency responses and public warnings.
In Kaohsiung’s Qishan District, residents were alarmed to find a motorcycle abandoned along a rain-drenched roadside—with no sign of its rider. Authorities suspect the individual may have fallen into a roadside ditch and been swept away by fast-moving floodwaters. A search operation is currently underway.
Meanwhile, in Tainan’s Anding District, heavy flooding submerged parts of Gangkou Village. At 7:41 a.m., emergency services received a distress call about a 69-year-old man in need of urgent medical care. Due to impassable roads, firefighters deployed a boat to reach the patient, who requires regular dialysis treatments. The man, surnamed Wang, was successfully evacuated from his flooded home and transported by ambulance to Annan Hospital. Officials confirmed that his condition stabilized after receiving medical attention.
Local governments have urged the public to remain indoors and avoid flooded areas as weather conditions remain unstable.
In addition to the natural disaster concerns, officials have warned the public to be vigilant against scams amid the upcoming nationwide cash payment program. Reports have emerged of fraudsters pretending to be qualified recipients of the NT$10,000 government subsidy even before disbursement has begun.
Economists are also cautioning individuals about potential losses tied to U.S. dollar deposits with seemingly high interest rates. Experts note that only those with adequate risk tolerance or future dollar-denominated needs are suited for such investments, as volatile exchange rates can quickly erode gains.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide relief where needed. Residents are urged to follow official weather updates and safety advisories.
