Tropical Depression “Dante” Nears Northern Luzon; PAGASA Warns of Monsoon Rains and Flooding Risks

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a 24-hour public weather forecast at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, July 22, alerting the public about intensified rains brought by the combined effects of Tropical Depression “Dante” and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

As of 3:00 PM, the center of Tropical Depression Dante was estimated at 1,120 kilometers east of Northern Luzon (18.1°N, 132.3°E), with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and gustiness of up to 55 km/h, moving north-northwestward at 20 km/h.

In addition, a low-pressure area (LPA) was spotted 155 kilometers east-southeast of Basco, Batanes (20.0°N, 123.4°E), further enhancing the southwest monsoon that continues to affect several parts of the country.


Heavy Rains and Possible Hazards

Monsoon rains are expected over:

  • Metro Manila

  • Bataan, Zambales

  • Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal

  • Occidental Mindoro

  • Benguet, Pangasinan

  • Tarlac, Pampanga, and Bulacan

These areas are warned of possible flooding and landslides due to moderate to heavy, and at times intense rains.

Meanwhile, occasional rains are likely in:

  • The rest of the Ilocos Region

  • Nueva Ecija, Quezon

  • The rest of MIMAROPA

  • Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Masbate

  • Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental

These areas may also face flooding or landslides triggered by sustained heavy rainfall.

For the rest of the country, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected. Flash floods or landslides are possible during severe thunderstorms.

  • Western Luzon: Moderate to strong southwest winds; seas will be moderate to rough (2.5 to 3.1 meters).

  • Eastern Visayas and the rest of Luzon: Moderate winds with 1.5 to 2.5 meter wave heights.

  • Mindanao and other regions: Light to moderate southwest winds; seas will be slight to moderate.
