Tulfo: “Let the Evidence Speak for Itself” — Impeachment Trial vs. VP Sara Should Proceed

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Erwin Tulfo believes that the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte should still push through despite the Supreme Court’s ruling declaring the complaint unconstitutional.

In a recent statement, Tulfo emphasized that under the Constitution, it is the Senate that holds the authority to try and decide on impeachment cases.

“Let the evidence speak for itself. If there is merit to the complaint, it should come out during the trial. It should not be dismissed outright,” Tulfo said in an interview.

The senator underscored the importance of due process and the constitutional role of the Senate as an impeachment court. He warned against prematurely blocking the process without allowing the presentation and scrutiny of evidence.

The Supreme Court earlier ruled that the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte was unconstitutional, citing violations of the one-year ban rule and the lack of due process.

However, Tulfo maintained that this should not override the Senate’s responsibility to weigh the merits of the case.

“The Constitution clearly states that the Senate shall decide on impeachment matters. Our job is to assess the evidence thoroughly — not to be hindered by technicalities,” he added.
