YUNLIN, Taiwan — July 7 — Typhoon Danas made landfall in Budai, Chiayi County at approximately 11:40 p.m. last night, bringing with it powerful winds and intense rainfall that battered neighboring Yunlin County throughout the night. The severe weather caused widespread damage and power outages across the region.
By 7:00 a.m. today, data from Taipower’s official website confirmed that over 30,000 households in Yunlin were still without electricity. Gukeng Township was the most severely affected, with more than 10,000 homes plunged into darkness—leaving more than half of the villages in the area without power. Emergency repair crews have since been deployed and are working around the clock to restore services.
Residents across Yunlin reported violent winds, with gusts surpassing level 10 intensity. Many locals shared that it was the strongest typhoon they had experienced in over three decades. Some were so worried about the structural integrity of their homes, particularly their windows, that they were unable to sleep through the night.
Numerous towns and villages in the county have reported similar incidents, including fallen trees, collapsed utility poles, damaged rooftops, and ongoing blackouts. Aside from Gukeng, Kouhu Township also suffered substantial power outages, with over 6,000 homes affected.
Gukeng Township Chief Lin Huiru stated that many roads had become impassable due to fallen debris and blocked access points. “Now that the storm is weakening, we’re focusing our efforts on road clearing and helping affected residents,” she said.
While the worst of the typhoon appears to have passed, local authorities continue to urge caution and encourage residents to stay indoors as cleanup and recovery efforts continue.
