Typhoon Danas Takes Unusual Route Toward Western Taiwan — Heaviest Impact Today

Taiwan – July 6, 2025 – Typhoon Danas, currently classified as a mild typhoon, continues to move northeast to north-northeast as it passes through the sea southwest of Eluanbi. As of today, its effects are being strongly felt across Taiwan, especially in areas south of Hsinchu, which are under an official land warning.

According to the popular meteorological page “Watch the Weather,” the typhoon is following a path that will bring its center from east of Penghu toward Taiwan’s western coast. Such a trajectory, particularly through the Taiwan Strait or central Taiwan, is considered highly unusual, with very few similar landfalls recorded in the past century. Authorities are urging residents in western Taiwan and Penghu to remain on high alert.

Unusual Path and Potential Impact

Meteorologists highlight that while Typhoon Danas is not expected to intensify significantly, its path warrants close monitoring. Forecast models, including the U.S. GFS system and several AI-generated tracks, predict that the storm will reach the northern waters of Taiwan and move toward the northeast of Matsu by Monday evening, July 7.

Interestingly, these models show a possible westward or even southwestward turn, with the typhoon slowing down and undergoing signs of reorganization. Despite this, the surrounding environmental conditions are not favorable for the system to strengthen. It is likely to remain a tropical depression (TD) or at the lower end of a light typhoon classification.

Extended Rainfall Expected in Southern Taiwan

One concern raised by “Watch the Weather” is that if Typhoon Danas maintains its relatively intact circulation, it could prolong the period of southwesterly winds and rainfall in the windward regions of southwestern Taiwan, including southern Kaohsiung and Pingtung.

These areas may continue to experience heavy rain even after the storm has passed due to the extended influence of moist, southwesterly air currents. Local authorities and residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding and to stay updated on the latest weather bulletins.

Public Safety Reminder:
Residents across Taiwan, especially in the western and southern regions, are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel, secure loose outdoor items, and follow instructions from local disaster response units. Continuous updates will be provided by the Central Weather Administration and other official sources.
