Typhoon Danas Triggers Land and Sea Warnings Across Taiwan, Work and Class Suspensions Announced in Southern Regions

TAIWAN — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) and Taiwan’s Coast Guard have issued sea and land typhoon warnings as Light Typhoon Danas approaches the island, bringing with it the threat of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous sea conditions.

At 8:30 a.m. on July 5, a Sea Typhoon Warning was issued, urging vessels navigating the Dongsha Island waters, Bashi Channel, and Taiwan Strait to remain on high alert. The typhoon’s outer circulation is enhancing convective cloud development, leading to localized heavy to torrential rains, especially in Changhua and Yunlin counties, as well as southern and eastern regions like Miaoli, Taitung (including Lanyu and Green Island), Hengchun Peninsula, and Hualien’s mountainous zones.

Public Safety Advisories

Residents are warned of lightning, strong gusts, landslides, and water accumulation in low-lying areas. A strong wind advisory is also in effect for several counties and cities including New Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu, where Level 6 winds and Level 8 gusts are likely.

Due to the typhoon’s outer circulation, high temperatures reaching 36°C are forecasted in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Kinmen, while Changhua County is under a yellow alert for heat. Citizens are encouraged to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated.

Sea Conditions and Beach Warnings

From Friday night through Saturday, long waves and high seas are expected around central and southern Taiwan, including Lanyu, Green Island, Hengchun Peninsula, Penghu, and Kinmen. Wave heights in Penghu’s coastal waters could exceed 5 meters, prompting authorities to advise the public to avoid beaches and waterfront areas during this period.
