Typhoon Leave Policy Explained

Under the “Regulations on Suspension of Work and School Due to Natural Disasters,” county and city governments can suspend classes and work based on weather forecasts and storm paths from the Central Weather Administration. When the typhoon’s storm radius is expected to pass within 4 hours and wind speeds may reach Level 7 (average) or Level 10 (gusts), local officials may declare a typhoon holiday.

Who Can Take Typhoon Leave?

If the mayor of the city or county where a person lives, works, or studies declares a suspension, they are entitled to take a typhoon leave. Even if no suspension is officially declared, individuals who cannot reach work due to transportation disruptions may also be granted leave based on local labor rules.

Will Salaries Be Affected?

The Ministry of Labor advises employers not to deduct salaries for employees who are absent during officially declared typhoon suspensions. For those who report to work despite the suspension, the Ministry recommends that employers offer hazard pay and additional support such as transportation assistance or allowances.

As Typhoon Danas continues to threaten parts of Taiwan, authorities are urging everyone to monitor official announcements, prepare emergency supplies, and stay updated through reliable government sources.
